First Steps

When YOU created YOUR account on the blogging platform “WordPress” OR when YOU received an invitation on a collaboration blog, most people will have a problem on How To start their first blog post. Here is an easy to follow step by step guide.

First step is looking on the left hand navigation side bar, see screenshot below, please.
.

New Blog Post With WordPress-1

.

Click on the buttons “Posts“, followed by “Add New“.

.

YOU will see now the following screen, see screenshot below, please.

New Blog Post With WordPress-2

.

First have a look NOW on the right hand navigation bar and click on the button “Visibility: Public” ===> Edit <===, see “red arrow”.

Following screen (see screenshot below, please) will appear.

New Blog Post With WordPress-3

.

The navigation box will pop up and YOU will see more options. Check the “circle” ===> “Private” <=== followed by a click on the button “OK“. YOUR blog post will be NOW “Private“, thus meaning that ONLY YOU can see it and nobody else (NOT PUBLIC PUBLISHING).

WHY this? As YOU are NOT YET comfortable with editing, so this is the BEST way to start as nobody else will see what YOU are doing 😉 NOW YOU can experiment around to learn all the different possibilities

.

.

Now when YOU want to see how YOUR blog post will look and how others would see it as well, YOU MUST first publish YOUR post, to do so check screenshot below, please.

 .

New Blog Post With WordPress-4

.

On right hand navigation side bar in the editing mode, click the button “Publish“.

NOW YOU will see how YOUR blog post would look in reality. BUT, as already said: it is STILL “PRIVATE” and nobody else could see it! Check screenshot below, please. YOU will see the word “Private” in front of the title of YOUR blog post, this shows YOU that it is NOT YET published to “Public“.

.

New Blog Post With WordPress-5

.

Switch sometimes between “Editing” and “Publish” to control YOUR precious work and to work on it for excellence 😉 Once satisfied with YOUR creation, make it “Public” by going to the right hand side navigation box and check the “circle” “Public“, followed by a click on the button “OK“.

.

WHAT’S BEST way to create a blog post?

That’s a question I get asked very often, so let us go for it: I will show YOU some tips and tricks 😉

Make sure NOT to loose the point about WHAT YOU want to post, so to do this start YOUR blog post first with some keywords and small phrases, remember that it is STILL in “Private Mode“, so GO for writing! Let it go, let it flow…

Here my keywords for creating this blog: first steps, screenshots, easy explaining, no technical words, explaining with simple words, step by step guide, asking for feedback, finding out where learners have problems and adapting (update) the blog post, creating a video about it on How To…

YOU might have remarked ALSO that I use a lot of “BOLD” in my blog posts!? WHY? That are the MOST important parts to remember in my posts. TIP: ONLY read the “BOLD” and YOU would be able to understand 😉

.

WHAT’S next step?

As YOU want that YOUR blog post(s) will get found by the “Search Engines” (Google, Bing, Yahoo &…) and that YOUR readers will be able to see about WHAT YOU are writing, it is very IMPORTANT to create “Categories” and ALSO “Tags“! YOU can edit them in the right hand side navigation bar.

Check screenshot below, please.

.

WordPress-Categories-1

.

Click on “+Add New Category” and insert YOUR text in the field, followed by a hit of the “Return-key of your computer”. Add as much as necessary, BUT NOT too much… I will explain in an next UPDATE why…

.

Next is to add the “Tags“, YOU find it also the right hand side navigation bar, check screenshot below, please.

.

WordPress-Tags-1

.

Insert in the text field YOUR “Tags” and click the button “Add“..

.

Stay tuned for next blog posts and for updates for this post 😉

Some (actually a lot…) told me that Twitter is worth NOTHING, really!? I got discussions with people about the value of Twitter and Social Media, people who don’t understand the importance and the influence that Social Media has and I took this as a challenge to answer through my blog posts to give THEM an idea about WHAT THEY are missing, check also my curation below please:

BUT lets come back to the topic of this blog post: Storytelling With Twitter-Possible? First of all let us find out WHAT Storytelling is:

NOW, how can WE make Storytelling happening with Twitter where WE have ONLY 140 characters maximum to post, sounds strange, isn’t it!? Well, I agree, when I took that challenge I thought that it wasn’t nearly possible. BUT I remembered a blog post which I did recently where I explain about ===> Updated Twitter Knowledge <=== and I decided to try out that sort of publishing, WHY NOT!

.Here we go, check it out…

PracTICE: LEARNing About Sustainability UP From The Early Age, A MUST!

.

better-world-hiking-artist.

It is a MUST for LEARNing about Sustainability UP from the early age! THE Love of Nature MUST stick in people so that WE know about WHAT WE have and WON’T have missing it anymore! The sentiment about WHAT nature really is MUST get learned over years to make sure that it remains ALSO when the students, learners, leave the school! THE BEST way is to use ===> PracTICE <===.

.

.

Psychology Today-nature-Sustainability-Happiness

Click the above image (screenshot) to access the article of ===> Psychology Today <===, a MUST to understand more!

.

How Could This Been Done In Practice?

Red Rose-Wild-GardenWhen youth is used up from early age to take care about nature, by giving THEM responsibility, about animals and ALSO flowers, gardening habits, bringing THEM in to the circle of taking care of nature by engaging THEM on practice, be doing it themselves, THEY will learn about:

  • Knowledge about seeding, knowing about the process how plants and flowers growKnowing from where the products THEY find in supermarkets come and how difficult it is to produce them. THEY are NOT ONLY one click away 😉

.

  • Knowledge about dangers for their project (pests, disease, bad weather conditions…)
  • Pride about the results of THEIR efforts => photos, slideshow, video, podcasts…
  • Curiosity to find out with experiments, guided by people who could give professional advice (gardener, experienced hobby-gardener)…

Proactive-Thinking mentality would be a result, THEY would THINK about what could destroy THEIR efforts! Something very important to get a Proactive-Thinking mentality! THEY would understand WHY it is important to fight for a BETTER world, getting the daily habits (reflexes) to make sure to preserve the beauty of nature! SO, let us start to think about How WE could teach the kids to get that Proactive-Thinking in PracTICE, if YOU won’t mind. Personally I would suggest this:

  1. Take the kids out for a walk in nature and ask them to take photos with THEIR Smartphones about what is interesting for THEM; YOU do the same and later YOU show THEM the difference and discuss about WHY YOUR photos are different. Take photos on different stages of the growth from the plants and flowers and document it in the blog. I suggest, when taking the photos, that YOU implant the date in the photos through a Photo-Editor program. I suggest the FREEWARE “Photoscape” which is very easy to use. As more photos YOU make, as it would be possible also to create a slow-motion video about the taken photos to show the growth of the plants and flowers in an interesting time laps view
  2. If your school allows it and has place for it, YOU may ALSO create a small garden in the school area. If so, apply the same advice as mentioned above.

Advice for creating a blog. I suggest to use WordPress as it is easy to learn and ALSO because they deliver a lot of FREE templates fitting for such projects. Personally I use the THEME “The Visual Theme“, where YOU can see the result of my blogging here:

Preparing our children for a better world

Preparing our children for a better world

Preparing our children for a better world

Chat iconMost teachers accept that Climate Change is a reality.  All around us we see extreme and unpredictable weather events occurring and the devastation they bring to our people and fellow creatures on our beautiful planet.  I was born in the 1950’s and never thought I would live to see the day when so many iconic animals would be on the verge of extinction.  I rue the day that the only place future generations will see Elephants, Rhinos and Lions will be in a zoo!  Yet it seems as I write that this may well come to pass unless we take positive action to protect our environment on a global level.

As educators I believe the most critical issue of our time is sustainability.  It is our duty to help prepare our students for what may well be the fight of their lives to save the planet and our precious wildlife.  The human population is now over 7 billion worldwide and we all need shelter and food.  Food security will become an increasingly pressing issue, as will the availability of clean water for our crops and consumption.  Realistically, we cannot ignore the fact that fundamental resources are becoming increasingly scarce.  Hence we must arm our students with the knowledge and passion to live in a sustainable and less consumer driven way.

THUMBS-UPIncreasingly in Australian schools I see teachers setting up vegetable gardens and chicken runs, in order to foster in our children an understanding of how to produce their own food in a sustainable and humane way.  We also need to make our students aware of where the food in the big supermarket chains come from and how they are produced.  More than ever before our mainstream food is full of pesticides and is genetically engineered.  The meat we eat comes from unsustainable factory farms, which are not only inhumane but also highly polluting.  When we talk about carbon and pollution, our children and we ourselves, should be aware that livestock production in it’s current numbers is one of the biggest contributors to destroying our planet.

I note a growing awareness in my global social media connections, that to eat meat on such a massive scale as we have become accustomed to, is simply ecocide.  For example, did you know that every half kilo of beef we produce takes 6,810 litres of water, 3 kilos of grain (plus irrigation), 16.4 kilos of roughage for feed (plus irrigation), and an addition 70 litres of water for drinking and processing!  This is staggering and we need to start to seriously question our diet in the light of these figures, or else face the consequence of being unable to feed our burgeoning population.  Here is an excellent National Geographic post with an interactive diagram of just how much water different types of livestock consume:

National Geographic is a very credible source information and this particular site is full of useful information for teaching sustainability issues.  The following infographic makes it clear that reducing the animal protein we consume will make an enormous contribution to the health of the planet.

Veganism-graphic-lead-1-537x409

.

Plastic is another terrible polluter and is destroying our oceans, which are the very lungs of the Earth itself. Birds, marine mammals and fish are full of plastic.  Creatures are often caught in plastic garbage and die slow, torturous deaths.  This is a sad fact, but in reality it is an easy problem to fix.  Don’t use plastic bags and don’t use plastic bottles for your water.  When I was a child we took string bags to the shops for our groceries and water never came in plastic bottles.  We used glass bottles for our drinks.

.

plastic

.As teachers we are in a unique position to help the next generation to protect our planet and we become like a pebble dropped in the ocean, with the ripples of awareness spreading far and wide.

We teach so many students our potential sphere of influence is enormous. Our access to social media makes it possible now to spread awareness all over the globe and connect to others we can exchange information with instantaneously.

Twitter has become an exceptional tool for spreading news and finding out facts the mainstream media do not cover.  Hence teaching students to use social media and twitter properly is also vital.  Just consider some of the recent uprisings and environmental disasters.

.

The first news of these came out on Twitter;  we have never had such a powerful tool to connect globally and unite against corporate greed and keep Earth and it’s creatures alive and healthy.

My plea to educators is to make the effort to connect with not only other teachers, but also to groups who are dedicated to saving our planet for future generations. We can take advantage of technology such as Skype to have live sessions with scientists and conservationists to further assist our students to cope with the challenging times ahead of them.

.

===> WE ALL need to learn about “Critical-Thinking” and “Proactive-Thinking” to understand THE importance of “Sustainability“!!! <===

A BETTER World is Possible: It Needs YOUR Action

A BETTER World is Possible: It Needs YOUR Action

For A Better World

Multi-Cultural Blog

A multicultural effort on showing how the world could become better. This blog is an example of multi-cultural author collaboration. This world that we live in is divided into different continents and countries. We still can make it as a better world, by finding areas of common interest among ourselves as humans, as well as sharing our knowledge about what could be done for a better world.

Actually (06 November 2010) we are present authors of Egypt, Luxembourg, Australia, United States, Switzerland, India and Italy, awaiting soon more countries to join in.

The authors are not “dreamers”, they have a “realistic thinking” background, they know that this world can not be changed in a short time, but they want to share their ideas and Tips to make it move forward

This article was a knol created on November 02, 2010 and was migrated to WP on December 29, 2011.

If you, dear reader would find something which you think is hurting you, or this could happen, so please let us know and we will try to clarify it… We don’t want to harm anybody, but it could be possible that we publish(ed) something without knowing that it could be not well accepted by some cultures. We are humans and trying to present something useful, so please if you find it not acceptable, just let us know and we will take care of it.. Thank you very much and we hope you enjoy it.. 🙂

Welcome To Our Readers

.

.

[GM]: Good manners, such as greeting somebody (Hello, Hi…) also and especially on Internet (on Internet it is disappearing almost), saying “Thank you” to somebody and “please” are “keywords” for showing “Respect” to each other.

In my country (Luxembourg) we even say that those words are the “keys” that open all the doors…

Different authors with different cultures are trying to meet and share their knowledge on a Blog to break out the distances among themselves. Most of the authors present here have an educational and/or medical knowledge background and are using this knowledge to give you, dear readers, a guideline, an impulse for thinking on it how it could be, when wished so

In this blog we will try to give as much as possible guidelines about what we authors present here think what could be done for a better world and also we will show on this knol how it could possible be realized by using ICT and Education as possibilities…

We are not “dreamers“, we have a “realistic thinking” background, we know that this world can not be changed in a Century Time, but we want to share our ideas and Tips to make it move forward…

If you, dear reader and/or knol author, have the same mentality, please let us know it by a comment.

Thanks to do so, you will be welcome 😉

When I do something for other people, I feel good, “says Peterson“. When you do something voluntarily for others, not only for its own interests, it is rewarded. In some mysterious way, serve as an “altruistic” (the opposite of selfishness) gives his own life more important. It seems that nature have put it in our genes, or that people are happy when they have the spirit of sharing, community spirit.

So, dear readers, make yourself feeling good and share this knol (unit of knowledge) with other people, thanks in advance 😉

Introduction

1ibdy1vf6wghd-n05dgl-trafficlightgreendan01We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth’s climate.
There are multiple ways existing already to make this World better, to let you know what could be done authors of this knol have created different sections to show you what exactly is existing, such as:
.
  • Alternative Energies for a better world
  • New Architecture Technologies for a better world
  • Science for a better world
  • Traditional medecine for a better world
  • Sharing our knowledge for a better world
  • Multicultural Events
  • New Knowledge in Psychology, the positive thinking
  • Education for a better world
  • Generation Exchange for a better world
  • Helping The Poor to take part of the already present knowledge
  • Financing with MicroCredits to give opportunity to learn
.

.
PS: Give your brain a kick and start thinking on how yourself can contribute to a better world, the solutions are described here in this blog 😉

Some wise words:

With realization of one’s own potential and self-confidence in one’s ability, one can build a better world. Dalai Lama

By developing a sense of concern for others’ well-being, then no matter what others’ attitudes are, you can keep inner peace. Dalai Lama

What Is Multicultural???

.

.

What is multicultural??? It is like a rainbow, lots of different colors and most lots of different mentalities, different ways to see the same things…

This blog tries to show the common things for everybody with different mentalities but with the same goal “For A Better World” and I am sure we will be able to find a common point of interest and also a common point of on how to change things 😉

The World, Our Home, Let Us Preserve It…

.
This video is a must to watch it: We are living in exceptional times. Scientists tell us that we have 10 years to change the way we live, avert the depletion of natural resources and the catastrophic evolution of the Earth’s climate.

The stakes are high for us and our children. Everyone should take part in the effort, and HOME has been conceived to take a message of mobilization out to every human being.

For this purpose, HOME needs to be free. A patron, the PPR Group, made this possible. EuropaCorp, the distributor, also pledged not to make any profit because Home is a non-profit film.

—> HOME has been made for you : share it! And act for the planet. <—

Yann Arthus-Bertrand

For Education: This is the BEST video ever made to explain what our World is, it takes 1h33 minutes, so prepare your courses in advance considering the time of the video… But it is worth to show your students this video and later on the other videos  who are shown in the section below. After watching these videos, try to make a “Question and Answer” session together with your students and learners, a need…

Me profiting from when I help other people, it is me who gives something and not the other person???” Such may be your thinking, but…There are new ways in Psychology who are describing this very well such as:

.
When I do something for other people, I feel good, “says Peterson“. When you do something voluntarily for others, not only for its own interests, it is rewarded. In some mysterious way, serve as an “altruistic” (the opposite of selfishness) gives his own life more important. It seems that nature have put it in our genes, or that people are happy when they have the spirit of sharing, community spirit.
.

.

When I am happy and talking to other persons so my positive karma is going over to other persons as well and they will learn also to become happy (without taking drugs) and happy persons are more open minded and constructive thinking as well. Constructive thinking means also doing and/or creating something new related to new acquired knowledge and sharing this new acquired knowledge again makes things move forward, a positive step who will get amplified by other people following that same good mentality…

Traditional Medicine

Krishan MAGGON

Krishan MaggonBefore World War II, medicine was mostly traditional all over the world except few drugs like aspirin, insulin and few vaccines. Advanced in medicine and science and imaging have contributed to the resurgence of modern medicine in most of the Western and developed world.

.
.
womanchemistgeraldg.01Lack of health care insurance in developing and poor countries and the high cost of modern medicine has made it out of reach for over 70% of global population. Thus over 5 billion persons in our world rely mainly on the traditional system of medicines like the Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, Shaman, Persian, Arab, African/Asian/local tribal medicine men, phytotherapy, homeopathy and a diverse variety of remedies, cures and treatments. These cures are often derived from nearby forests or local resources. The early practitioners of traditional medicine were saints, community leaders or learned scholars and were recognized as well wishers of the society. This tradition still continues in rural communities, where traditional medicine men are sought after for health care and general social problems of the family.
The main ethical issue in poor communities and populations today is how to deliver modern healthcare and make it accessible to all. It is a moral dilemma that even over 60 years after the foundation of WHO, the world is not able to educate all its children or provide an efficient health care to the poor sections of its population or eliminate misery and poverty.

ayurveda
www.ibspro.net/tag/element

The cost of traditional medicine is much lower, it is closer to the community, and patients get personal attention or the healing touch of the practitioner who speaks the same language. Traditional medicine until a few decades ago has never been practiced as a commercial service like modern medicine and patients pay according to their ability and financial status. The World Health Organization has recommended for the incorporation of the traditional systems of medicine for communities where it is accepted, into the primary health care system. Although traditional medicine did not learn from the rest of the world or incorporate modern ideas from science and medicine, there is no reason for modern medicine to ignore traditional systems of medicines. These systems must be reinterpreted in the light of our new knowledge and incorporated in modern medicine along with other forms of traditional medicine.

New Drugs Offer Magical Cures To Save Lives

New anticancer drugs in development offer us the possibility of dramatic and complete cure for Metastatic melanoma.
The story of the 2 new wonder drugs Ipilimumab and BRAF inhibitor PLX 4032 have been extensively covered in the media.
New drugs acting on the nerve growth factors NGF offer us the real possibility of relief from chronic pain for 1-2 months with a single injection. In addition, these drugs are non addictive and free from liver, kidney and gastrointestinal adverse drug reactions of current analgesics.
The central role of beta amyloid protein in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease has highlighted its role in memory loss and cognitive functions. New drugs aimed at beta amyloid protein may slow, stop or even reverse degrading cognitive function and memory loss.

What Can Education Do For A Better World???

Teacher iconEducation, if well managed can do a lot for a better world. The teaching system (worldwide) should teaching more about sensibleness of nature and social conflicts, not only the basics what is already on the teaching schedule, more teaching of sensibleness how humans are destroying our planet, trying to make learners sensible to the planet problems…

What is Education already doing for a better world??? There is a worldwide Student Exchange Program for cultural understanding existing as well as a special Concept of knowledge sharing from the European Commission, called “COMENIUS“, please watch here “Comenius“. Other possibilities from the European Commission could get found here “Education & Training“.

Education should be FREE for everybody worldwide, there is already something happening, not known by most of the people, have a look here please “Khan Academy“. Khan (The Founder) intends nothing less than “tens of thousands” of tutorials offering the “first free, world-class virtual school where anyone can learn anything.” Have a look on here as well, please: Bill Gates’ favorite teacher

.In collaboration with the Alliance of CivilizationsCISCO launched Dialogue Café at the Istanbul Forum. The project is based on a radical but simple idea: ordinary people have more in common than not and given the opportunity will explore their common interests even across radical geo-political divides.

Dialogue Café links diverse groups of citizens from around the world through third generation video-conferencing technology, thereby creating a new space for social innovation and exponentially expanding our ability to solve problems and innovate as a global community. Dialogue Café’s development is being supported by an international multi-sector consortium of partners, enabled by cutting-edge technology, and most importantly is driven by ordinary people.

The Café proof of concept will commmence with preparations for pilot cafes in New York, London, Istanbul and the Middle East.

In the French Speaking Community there are already similar activities running, those cafés are called “Café des âges“, places where young and older generation come together around a good drink and where they are discussing about a “daily chosen” theme.
One of those themes is as example (we published it already here): “Music, A Link Between Generations?“.

What Can ICT Do For A Better World???

computer-ajajashton01ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) has a wide impact for a better world as the whole knowledge of mankind (when present on Internet) could get used to share it (when Internet connexion provided, what is not the case in all countries). When we use the word “World“, we are talking about the “World in the 21th Century“, thus meaning that we have also to consider Internet being part of our world as both are interacting…

So as most of you know probably, Internet is like a trap when people are not aware about the dangers and the security. Security is a must on our days, we need to protect our computers and also we need some special tools to know if the web sites we are visiting are secure. One of those tools is WOT (World Of Trust)…

Music As A Link For Multicultural And Generations Living Together

bassguitara.j.ashton

Music is a very good possibility for sharing feelings and for showing also the taste of different generations and nationalities. But it is not only the music, people forget much often to understand also the lyrics. So when listening to a music video why not searching to find the same with lyrics.

By understanding the meaning behind a song (Music and Lyrics), it is possible to feel how a generation and a culture is thinking. By organizing Multi Cultural Music Festivals in a country, this allows to bring together different cultures…

International Food, Eating and Hunger In The World…

chefjarnovasamaaInternational Food, why fore is this section in here, sounds strange to me??? Answer: by knowing what other people are eating and also their habits on how they are eating we could understand a bit more about their lifestyle and their mentality as well as their social status…

Eating is a must for every human isn’t it??? And by eating different dishes from different cultures we are knowing a bit more about other cultures isn’t it??? By creating exhibitions about international food we are creating places where multicultural people are meeting to know each other better, isn’t it so???

Aware of the issues represented by the Greater Region in the economic development of the catering sector, EXPOGAST is located in Luxembourg, the business heart of the region. The opportunities offered by the international dimension of Luxembourg, Belgium, France and Germany are enhanced by the specific features of Luxembourg where 44.66% (1) of residents are foreign, expecting the highest added value to be offered, but demonstrating the particularly high level of loyalty among traditional Luxembourg visitors.

The social criteria of current and potential visitors to EXPOGAST: the international community, multiculturalism, multilingual skills and a high purchasing power are some of the factors favouring the economic development of gastronomy, culturally embedded in custom and usage.

The roots of the people are Celtic and the spoken language is Luxembourgish, while the administrative languages are French and German. The newspapers are mostly written in at least three languages, Luxembourgish, French and German with sometimes also English…

Living myself in a country (Luxembourg) where there are living about 44% (2010) people from different nationalities, even that Foreigners could outnumber Lux nationals by 2020. It is the highest proportion of foreigners of any EU country, so I am used to it, living with different mentalities, but others probably not…

Luxembourg is situated in the heart of Europe and bordered by France, Belgium and Germany. In 2009 the abroad (frontier runners) working people in Luxembourg by per cent was 43% from the total working people in Luxembourg. From those 43% were 49,4% French people, 25,4% Belgium people and 25,1% from Germany. More information here in French: les frontaliers.lu

Some Humor 😉

Humor is internationally accepted and understood… With humor things who normally would never get accepted could get accepted by the way of laughing about each other (very important)!

Humor makes it much more easy to bring people on a “win-win” situation, thus meaning (as example): somebody tells a joke about the country of his “conversation partner” and the other one replies also with a joke about the other ones “conversation partner” country. So at least they have “fought” on a social and peaceful wise, which is normally accepted and when there are good (peaceful)  characters this could even help to build up a friendship 😉

Authors Point Of View On How To Realize A Better World

 Ibrahim H. Hussney

Ibrahim H. HussneyIn the world of managing and developing businesses; you need always to be near from the facts and working with the reality, the necessary existence of these two principals in the mind are for the sake of the business itself and also help not to lose the thread of the correct ways needed for developing its management, The question which may jump to your mind now, are you able alone to see this reality?. And if so; for what extend you can?

For a Better World, you need to work within a team considering yourself like a part of a bigger system, nowadays you are not able to isolate yourself and working everything alone, performing what we called “One Man Show” became not feasible anymore, twenty eyes can see better than two, also twenty eyes can see much more details and touch much of the realities especially when we talk about those what are hidden away from the only two eyes.

Five tools you need to dominate in order to develop your talent of Seeing Reality Through Other’s Eyes, so you need to go through:

a-Establishing more relationships for widening and supporting your ideas.

b-Go for more conversations and brainstorming to determine the future shape.
c-Suspending your assumptions for a while and think systemically.
d-Balancing between advocacy and inquiry while implementing new policy.
e-Open your mind, heart and teach yourself the philosophy of keep moving to see new people and places.
  • More relationships mean more people to know, mean more ideas to discover, mean more opportunities to discipline your own ideas and mean finally to get the necessary support for these ideas.
  • More conversations and brainstorming to be involved with, mean to become more near to discover the better shape for the future you are looking for yourself and for your society; hence for the whole world.
  • Try to suspend your assumptions for a while which always pushing you, change your thinking style from linearity to non-linearity or in spite you are always logic in your thinking you need also some creativity to express. The best is to balance between both styles.
  • Never adhere yourself always to advocate your new policy; train yourself to inquire for more and more details, such behavior certainly will develop your ideas and support your advocacy at the end of the day, helping in implementing your new policy smoothly; also balancing between both issues is always required.
  • Open your mind, your heart; open all of your possible windows to learn and to know whatever is new and all whatever may help in achieving your goals; train yourself to adapt the philosophy of keep moving, that will help your talent of discovering things via visiting the new places and knowing new people and cultures.

Understanding Internet-Internet, the virtual savant child

Internet is a “living producttechnique! To be viewed as a “childto be educated by millions of people simultaneously, with different traditions and languages, with different mentalities and this in real time.

“The child” Internet, with instant contributions from users around the world (all of us) will be “fed” so + / – “textual” and “audio-visual”. The quality of this “food” is dependent on ourselves, our contributions to the community!

This “child” Internet, is gathering all the knowledge of the world and we shall get an answer, as soon as we ask it, of course!

Character, honesty and credibility of this “child” is formed by those who educate it. Those who educate, are necessarily all of us, everyone, the community!

I hope that this practice visualization, pushes you to think a bit further and THAT it helps you to better understand and / or better-learn Internet!

===> There are no problems, only solutions! THE Whole (Community), WE will find the right solution! <===

Nature shows us (bees, ants) and history too. Misstep learn from the past and try to “set” to do better! Internet is the perfect tool for this, but beware, it’s us (community) that are building it! WE, those who feed and educate this “savant child“!

When I say “WE“, it means: our character, our beliefs, our weaknesses, our honesty, in short, our whole being. Internet, THE  “virtual savant child” is the product of our entire society!

Internet is THE “virtual savant child“, created by the world!

Internet The Revolution, A New Mass-Media

As at the time the TV was as new means of communication, today a new mass media just appeared . Internet, mass media apart, which “a priori” has nothing extraordinary, but is it true ? No, certainly NOT. We have to do with a bi- directional mass media (two-way). Until now we used to click a button to access the music and multimedia content (stereo , TV, etc. .), BUT WE could not communicate with these technical devices , WE were only transmitter. Now , with the Internet it is different.

.

Through actions and also a click (a button on the mouse) WE can do a lot with technique, involves writing texts, receive answers back …

===> WE are both transmitter and receiver. <===
.

WE all newborns in the virtual life like in the real world, there are people who have more knowledge and experiences , which does mean that WE all must follow a lifelong learning

Internet, freedom of expression and total anarchy?

.
.

ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), are now irreplaceable and necessary in a changing world with new technology.

.
.

A technology that is reflected in our real world, and both influence each other!
.

Please NOTE: concerning Internet and its use there are many laws (must accept…)! And above all respect! This is comparable to our real world …
.

Also see my blog:

“Computer mafia” (the bad boys) works very fast and it takes advantage of the non vigilance and lack of knowledge of Internet users (ourselves)! It is not only security software that can help secure and protect our computers , but first we must know how to use them too!

.

Well yes, that’s us, the users of our computers (whereby smartphones and tablets are ALSO computers…) and the Internet, who are responsible and who will be more accountable in the future! .

.

===> A “CLICK” solution, as with a remote control at home, does not exist and never will be invented to ensure 100% security. <===

.

Anyway, a 100% security does not exist and is an illusion!

This new mass media (computers & Internet) is not only indomitable with the technique, but also with vigilance and knowledge necessary to use the software (programs) security!

===> It is up on us to learn how to use those software and learn to be vigilant! <===

Learn more:

.

.

Well yes, we have no choice. It is not enough to use this technical tool and believe that everything works perfectly, but this “toy” (Internet), which is not but most people believe that it is one, is intelligent and it grows at an incredible rate.

.

It is a “toy” that lives, it is a virtual world for which we are responsible. WE copy ourselves into this world with all our merits and shortcomings!

Internet is the mirror of morality in our society! Does this make YOU think and reflect? I hope, may be then you will understand how the Internet really works?

Building a Community_Using Pictures

Building a Community: Using Pictures

There are many “buzz” words in education; filtering, understanding, and implementing concepts can seem overwhelming. Many questions arise. Why does it matter? Where do I start? What will this mean for my students? So I focused on one concept: building a community. This is one way my classroom developed their sense of community.
A few words from the “Kid President

…. (My “hook” to my students)

Why does it matter?
Building a community within and outside of the classroom focuses deeply on the implications and actions of the story it tells to others. I remember a student once proclaiming,” You must live at school, its your home!” That student was 5 years old at the time and those seemingly innocent comments made me think. How can we transform our classroom into a community? “In other words, interaction enables people to build communities, to commit themselves to each other, and to knit the social fabric (Beem 1999: 20).”

Where do I start?

(Setting: Special Education Classroom 2013-14 school year, students k-1)
I started by asking two questions.

What do you want from your teacher?
What do you want from your school?

I looked at them and they looked at me and after several minutes.
“I want friends,” said one student.
“I want to be with them,” said another.

.
They were looking for social autonomy, social acceptance, and to build their own community. The need for community is evident, clearly important, and an essential component of success in school.
As a classroom we set expectations:
Students:

THUMBS-UPRespect for one another. This meant students understood we all have our own need to express ourselves, share ideas, and the right to react differently. We did not all have to be the same. Instead we celebrated and encouraged free thinking, differences, and others success.
We succeeded together and failed together.
We brought our individual talents together and showcased them individually as well.

.

My Role: “Coach”

  • Provide experiences for them to grow as individuals
  • Show them how to fail; how to react to failure and use it to succeed
  • Use their interdependence to collaborate and grow academically and socially

sharing iconThen we overhauled the classroom. We sat down as a group and I asked them to show me how they wanted to learn. I gave them guidelines: we have to be able to see the projector, avoid placing tables near the sink, and we need to be able to see one another. From there they created a learning environment they wanted. We developed our own identity as a classroom. They created a wall of our pets. A dedicated space they could go to when they needed space and see from afar. They wanted deep connections they could see. It was a special place they went to “turn it around,” think, and connect. Soon our idea of community spread to other students their age. Every morning a few students would come by and visit our wall dedicated to animals. Making comments, laughing, and at times bringing their own photos as a contribution. It became a focal point of our room that symbolized their way of connecting to their community. By the end of the year they had accomplished their goals of connecting and making friends.

Collaborate with students to build their community to create academic and social change.
Stay tuned.

Figure n °1 Paul Otlet, Traité de Documentation, 1934, p 419

Otlet2

Figure n°2 : Paul Otlet, Traité de Documentation, 1934, p. 40

Otlet3

Figure n°3 : Paul Otlet, Traité de Documentation, 1934, p. 41

Using Social Media in Education to Effect Positive Global Change

Using Social Media in Education to Effect Positive Global Change

There is no doubt we now live in challenging times on Planet Earth.  Our burgeoning human population is seven billion and rising.  Resources are diminishing and our iconic species are disappearing at an exponential rate. We do not have to stand by and watch our beautiful planet destroyed and trashed.  In addition to reducing our own environmental footprint and teaching our students to do the same, we now have the power of social media at our fingertips to help raise awareness of important issues right around the world.  This beautiful image appearing in the Arctic Ice before the Sea Shepherd has become a powerful symbol and rallying flag for the cause of our wonderful marine mammals:

Image

When environmental disasters occur and there are social uprisings of oppressed peoples of the world, no longer do we have to rely on mainstream media, which are often in the pocket of powerful political interests.

We now have Twitter, which in my view is one of the most powerful tools for social change and raising global awareness we have ever had!  Through my own proactive participation on Twitter, I have been able to take part in positive social movements for change in unison with those of like mind.

One of my most passionate concerns is for our increasingly fragile ecosystem.  Through Twitter I have witnessed the power of the people to shine a light on ecocide and to pressure governments and organisations to change destructive practices.  WE are able to connect with those of like mind and have the power to directly contact news providers and celebrities who have great power and massive followings.  Twitter is an immediate real time global conversation.

Just recently the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji, and the captivity of highly sentient orcas in marine parks has triggered global outrage.  Twitter is playing an enormous part in bringing the plight of these wonderful creatures to the attention of the people of the world.  Groups have been able to organize and participate in a new phenomenon known as Tweetstorms, where many people act in union to make a topic trend around the world. For example the topic #tweet4taiji trended around the world for several days, and resulted in worldwide mainstream media coverage. We all have power when united on social media.  Every individual counts.

OUR students will inherit many difficult political, social and environmental problems, the severity of which we can only imagine.  We are truly derelict in our duty if we fail to empower our students to raise their own voices in the fight for our precious planet and the generations to come.  I intend to initiate a project involving my students researching, debating, creating digital projects and then using Twitter to raise awareness about the shark cull my own government has embarked on in Western Australia.  Using Twitter will enable my students to not only access an authentic global audience, but also to effect real change.  Other schools will also be doing similar projects.

Images and symbols are important in global Twitter campaigns and give students and people a strong focus.  Twitpic can be used to add images to our posts and we can also add links to youtube videos, online flyers, Thinglinks, Padlets and other digital media created by students.  Platforms like TweetDeck and HootSuite enable users to organise their twitter stream into topics and schedule their messages.  We need to teach our students how to use these features.

Never has a generation needed a voice more than now.  We are on the cusp of a major paradigm shift in the way we as humans view and treat our fellow creatures and our environment.  Our students need to become the stewards of the earth not it’s conquerors or exploiters.

===> WE need to teach them how to use social media like twitter safely, responsibly and powerfully to help protect and nurture our planet. <===

HowTo | TEACHing In The 21st Century | THE Change

HowTo | TEACHing In The 21st Century | THE Change

.

Wordl-Logo-21stCentury-Education.

WHAT Did Change?

First of ALL, WE as teaching persons are NOT anymore teaching in a closed room, NO WALLS anymore as WE are using NOW ICT, the internet and Edtech tools as well as Social-Media! We are visible and can use “Communication“, OHHHH, do We know what that is!? It is a two-way, a “bi-directionalway, MOST are certainly NOT used to it, ONLY used to give the directions to OTHERS and standing in front of the classroom. BUT NOW, there is a NEW pedagogy in general, check, please:

Teaching, blog posts shouldn’t be boring anymore, let us try to give this IMPORTANT message through, please, thanks. Engaging, Motivation, Fun, visual thinking, creativity, passion, should be part of it as well. To make a start, here below a music video 😉

BTW: if WE, as teaching persons don’t show OUR creativity in blogs, posts, HOW could WE expect that Students, Learners will learn it? WE need to be an example for THEM 😉

.

.

And NOW while using the internet, Apps, BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) there comes ALSO another BIG CHANGE: and every medal has its revere, so ALSO these mentioned 😦 WE, as teaching persons can’t and DON’T have the right to ignore that, OR are WE ONLYCherry-Pickers“!? WE have to look on OUR LEARNERS STUDENTS to give THEM BEST Education, right? An Education who follows the needs of the Century and the actual situation, an Up-To-Date Education! Thus meaning: WE MUST have Cyber-Security knowledge, the basics!

This said, it would be good to remind this, please. ===> I am NOT a TEACHER, I am an Awakener! <===

.

Teacher-Awakener

.

WHAT SHOULD 21st Century Education be in short form? Check ===> 1.) Awareness 2.) Responsibility 3.) THE WHY 4.) The consequences 5.) TEACHing 6.) Collaboration

I would ALSO invite YOU to read the book of “Howard GARDNER” ===> “Five Minds For The Future” where YOU will see below about WHAT it is. In My Humble Opinion: A MUST READ to understand WHAT WE as teaching persons need to take care about for the 21st Century LEARNER.

5 Minds For The Future

help-books-aj-svgajash01To achieve the above mentioned, WE need ALSO skills about Critical-THINKing and Proactive-THINKing, check below, please, for more information:

Thus Meaning – Awareness Is A Must! ===> Adapting To ICT! <===

THUMBS-UPTeachers are getting seen, are visible through Social-Media, parents are ALSO used to ICT and Social-Media and have sometimes good knowledge about it and Newspapers are daily publishing about what is NOW already NOT so new anymore, the problems from the internet, the Cyber-Security issues such as attacks, Malware infections through visiting websites, the MUST of installing Antivirus and Anti-Malware solutions (the condom for internet usage…)…

If TEACHERS, EDUCATORS are NOT prepared for that (EDUcation SHOULD motivate that knowledge, anyway…) THEY will get seen by the masses as #21tCenturyiDiots, as this is already circulating through the Social-media, such as Twitter and Facebook! WE as teaching persons MUST adapt to that situation and learning the basics of Cyber-Security, which is actually NOT that difficult as most people think, it is mostly a REFLEX which WE need to adapt!

Teachers, Educators, who are showing up on Social-Media with mediocre knowledge are certainly NOT anymore that welcome, as THEY show a BAD reputation for the profession of teaching persons!

Mac Mentality?

Ohhhh, there I am touching some for sure, strange title, isn’t!? WHAT has a Mac-Mentality to do with 21st Century Education? WHY do I mention this here? MORE as MOST would THINK (?), WE go for Deep-THINKing NOW, OUT of School-Cocoon Mentality, WHAT happens in Real-World (BTW: I am NOT against Apple and NOT looking for an OS-WAR… Any OS has its right to exist! 😉

UnLEARNing the OLD 2 adapt 2 the NEW Pedagogy ===> http://www.scoop.it/t/21st-century-learning-and-teaching/?tag=Unlearning …

Let me explain a bit: my sixteen (16) years of experience (2014) with people who are Mac users (where I have a lot of friends using a Mac) has shown me that these users don’t mostly care about Cyber-Security as Apple told them they shouldn’t have to take care, that Apple products don’t get virus! BUT that has changed over the years and even Apple changed the text as shown below, please check it.

.

mac-before-after-animated

.
Apple related products have gained a great marked share now and they are NOW ALSO interesting for the Cyber-Criminals!  The same even for Linux also, Microsoft anybody knows that already since very long! Let us have a look on the market share of the different “Operating Systems” (OS):
.
===> OS market share: Windows, 90.66% – Mac, 7.73% – Linux, 1.61% (10/2013) <===

Please check ALSO my curation about everything malicious about Apple products (in English, French and German):

THUMBS-UP

.
.
NOW WE should accept that =======> Nobody-Is-Perfect <======= and WE SHOULD change OUR way of THINKING about Cyber-Security!
.
.

Priority Change In Education, A MUST!

WE as teaching persons have FIRST to remind us THIS:

TEACHING the Profession THAT creates OTHER Professions

.

When WE have a look on the left hand side picture, it SHOULD remind us WHAT OUR task really is, isn’t it!? A BIG Responsibility for sure, and one which WE can handle if WE are Up-To-Date with OUR “Professional Development“, especially when WE know where to set the PRIORITY!

WHAT does the market need? That SHOULD be OUR first THINKing! Employers NOW need people with computer and ICT skills, NO WAY to say I don’t know about that, even in the lowest career! THAT was YESTERDAY! Nearly everything NOW is handled with computer based Technology and every crafts man needs ALSO to have a basic knowledge about ICT!

.By knowing this, WE MUST focus on good basic ICT skills up from the early age to give OUR Students, LEARNers, these skills by teaching them about ICT! And by the way, when we are talking about ICT skills, WE can’t anymore forget about basic skills and knowledge about Cyber-Security! It is OUR responsibility to prepare OUR studenst, learners, for the real world as THEY (employers and WE) are confronted on a daily base with such problems!

In the 21st Century there is a MUST of Priority CHANGE in EDUcation: WE MUST adapt to the change and integrate Cyber-Security in OUR Mentality! YES, I said Mentality, the way WE are THINKING!

Fore more information, please check:

If NO CHANGE, Then WE Are Creating A Society Of NAIVETY!

sharing iconSounds strange, the topic? Try to Deep-THINK and YOU will understand? Let me explain a bit: by being “Cherry-Pickers” and ONLY showing the positive side of the internet WE don’t show the REALITY! Remember YOU that every medal has its reverse, so ALSO the internet and any Apps as also any other EdTech tool! WE should first tell the students, learners that there are dangers and ALSO Cyber-Crime around and that ===> Nobody-Is-Perfect <===. Remind every time also this ===> Forewarned Is Forearmed <===.

SO… NOW by knowing this, remember ALSO that WE are living in a sharing society through Social-Media,OK? Imagine that there will be MORE people without the appropriate knowledge and skills and share it with OTHERS…

I invite YOU to read my blog posts below for more information:

Digital Citizenship And ALSO Its Terminology

When WE want to share OUR thoughts on a global view with OTHERS, who have a different mentality (and that is for sure…), different culture (that is for sure also), different laws (that again is also for sure)  WHEN WE talk about Digital-Citizenship on a global view WE must know that there are a lot of different definitions about it who are dependent on which continent (and country also) one is living! Sounds strange, BUT it is a fact, especially when one is involved on Social-Media (Twitter and Facebook), where outside Europe ===> Internet-Safety, Cyber-Security and Privacy <=== are NOT that much considered! The same ALSO, in general, the TERMINOLOGY of Cyber-Security isn’t really understood by most of people, Educators and Teachers especially…

In my humble opinion, it doesn’t help a lot to speak about something (whatever it would be…) by NOT knowing the TERMINOLOGY, so let us start with that first, please. WE will have a look on an Infographic to explain… By The Way: this is THE BEST Infographic I actually know and it is from EDUDEMIC! A website to bookmark and to follow on Social-Media as well 😉 .

Terminology

Chat iconSo, let us come back to the Terminology, please. MOST of the employed Terminology is already well known by most users, BUT especially Privacy, Internet-Safety and Cyber-Security are a bit seen as “StepChildren” in Education and THAT shouldn’t be as THEY are a part of 21st Century MUST have knowledge, excuse-me please 😉 WE need to give OUR kids the BEST Education while working and learning with BYOD and any connected device to the internet! We as TEACHING persons don’t have the right to be CHERRY-PICKERS, so as every medal has its reverse WE MUST show that side ALSO to OUR learners, kids, students! THAT is OUR RESPONSIBILITY!

The “Operating System” (OS) doesn’t matter at ALL, they ALL have vulnerabilities and need care, such as “OS Updates” (Windows, Mac, Linux and others…), Browser Updates, Third Party Updates (ALL installed programs on the computer…), and of course special protections such as Anti-Virus, Firewall and Anti-Malware!

SO… To let YOU know about those vulnerabilities, please, have a look here:

The Power of Social Media in Education

As a teacher in Australia, I first started my journey into social media at a conference where I was introduced to Edmodo, a global network for teachers and students.  Through Edmodo I was able to break down the walls of our classroom and enable my students to communicate with students and their teachers all over the world. One of the most exciting things we did was join a multi-global group with classes from the U.S, China, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand.  We discussed important issues, found out what we had in common and shared our projects with an authentic audience.  The students loved it, and particularly loved the interaction and the feedback they would get from teachers and students in other parts of the world.  Our school is in an isolated rural area, and this connection was extremely exciting and helpful in promoting global understanding for my students.  Giving students the ability to connect on educational social media is just as important as making connections with other teachers is for me.

My next step into the world of social media for educators was to join twitter.  As an older teacher, this was a big step for me, but it was a very positive one.  Through twitter I was able to connect in real time with teachers from all parts of the world and have fascinating and informative discussions on an extraordinary range of educational topics.  I now regularly participate in weekly discussions on twitter with other teachers.  I have gained tremendous knowledge and amassed terrific resources and connections through twitter.  I cannot recommend it enough to other teachers.

Yammer is another network I regularly participate in with other teachers from the Department of Education & Communities in NSW.  Yammer has become an essential part of my professional development and also provides enormous inspiration to me as a teacher.  I am able to ask a question on any technical or educational topic I could ever imagine, and almost immediately I receive wonderful advice, resources and support from other wonderful, collaborative teachers.  Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine such a treasure trove of educational support than I receive from my network on Yammer!

Blogging is another medium my students and I have used to connect with other classes online. My class kept their own blogs and posted their links to a multi-class group on Edmodo and received tremendous feedback, again learning so much about what goes on in other classrooms beyond the walls of our school.

Our students live in a world where social media is the norm, in terms of connecting with others. They need to practice and learn safe digital citizenship under our care so they can navigate the internet without danger.  It is our duty of care to give them a  safe online space where they can master these skills in preparation for both their present and future.  We are negligent if we do not provide this opportunity and model the necessary skills and ethics they need to use online.

The game of Minecraft, which can be likened to digital lego in a virtual world, can also be a shared community for students.  I setup a server so that my classes could all enter a Minecraft world together and help each other to build.  We named this unit of work Respectful Relationships, and the students put together their own Charter of Rights for all to follow.  This was an extremely engaging and exciting experience for the students.  The most rewarding aspect of the unit was that it was the students who peer taught each other collaboratively.  It was a truly wholistic, student centred learning activity.

Image

It was wonderful to see students teaching each other how to build.  In addition, some of my students joined in a weekly session on a minecraft server with students and teachers from other schools.  We were all able to learn a great deal, problem solve and have fun doing so.

Social media comes in many forms now, but has become an essential part of my teaching practice and professional learning.  My professional learning network has grown exponentially since my journey began in 2010.

OK, I took THAT challenge and I started this blog with some people TOGETHER, where first post was this one ===> Introduction To Global Education And Social-Media <=== followed by Pippa’s blog post ===> I Think Therefore I Blog <===.

There were more blog posts published later, this one should have to come out earlier, but due to time problems and arrangements on who will make what, it took a bit longer before publishing… I should have been responsible ONLY for creating the blog and Pippa should have to create the Google Drive Spread Sheet (OLD Google docs…). BUT, Pippa asked me to create also the Google Spread Sheet, because of time problems, fair enough, which (as I have the necessary time…) did also then… SO, here it is now and the Google Drive Spread Sheet is prepared ALSO, but actually ONLY on personal invite by email to elaborate it before making it public… Preparation is a MUST when sharing it on a global audience…

Find below a screenshot of the prepared  Google Drive Spread Sheet and have a deep look on it, please, to understand the WHY behindThank YOU. When WE are sharing on Social Media WE must be aware that OUR audience is broad and and that WE have to deal ALSO with different generations and cultures, it is NOT so easy, BUT possible 😉 WE need to understand and to try to take care of the Global Sensitivity (thanks Pippa for that word…)…

.

Global Sensitivity on Social-Media

Click on image to enlarge it and to read it, please…

.

Deep-THINKing about the said above: when WE publish and share on the internet, especially on Social-Media, WE can’t choose OUR audience (WE can restrict, BUT…)! Every body WHO wants to read it, will do so; so WE have to take care about that situation 😉 WHEN WE go out in public places such as bars, cafés, Pubs, WE can choose with whom WE discuss and WE can choose ALSO mostly the place, BUT NOT with the internet as anyone has access to what WE are publishing!

So, when WE have to create a tweet, WE are mostly restricted with the 140 (120) characters, right? That’s WHAT most people think, BUT WE have the possibility to give a reply to OURSELVES as well and ALSO to mention in a tweet that there will be some more tweets to follow, please check screenshot below who explains…

Cyber-Security And Privacy Knowledge As Skills In The 21st Century Are NOT Yet Enough Taught And Present, WHY!?

.

userfredericmoser01Did YOU realize already that WE are living in the 21st Century and that WE nearly ALL are using the so called NEW TECHNOLOGIES, the internet, the smartphone(s), laptops, computerstablets, household goods who are connected to the internet, and this on a daily base!? Did YOU ever started THINKING about such consequences concerning YOUR Privacy and vulnerability to Cyber-Security!? As far as I know, from practice while talking to people, most people are NOT as nobody has given them advice, NOR were they taught about it in schools, and there is the problem!

In the digital age, as WE are living NOW in it, WE MUST learn on a daily base to adapt to its very quick change! Education can’t follow with that as it is and was almost years behind… It needs to have a ===> RETHINK <=== to catch up!

SO… By knowing this and accepting it ALSO (the most difficult, BUT…) WE would be good advised for learning on a daily base to get the MOST out of necessary knowledge and skills to give OUR kids the BEST Education possible, an ===> Up-To-Date <=== knowledge, a knowledge who isn’t ONLY a cherry-picked knowledge, BUT a knowledge who includes ALSO Privacy and Cyber-Security as also skills!

The future is also that any device, even in the household, will be connected to the internet. It is called “The Internet Of Things” and as with any NEW technical stuff, it brings risks and vulnerabilities

MOST of people don’t realize the importance of privacy, especially for Cyber-Security and Identity Theft, check the video below who explains very good, please.

.

.

After watching the video YOU certainly are surprised and hopefully also willing to learn a bit more, it is actually NOT that difficult as most people think.

Who’s To Blame For Cyber-Security problems!?

Surveys from professional companies are NOW ALSO showing that Cyber-Security is OUR ALL responsibility, check below, please…

The Internet Of Things

For pretty much anyone in the Western world, the Internet is not only ubiquitous, it’s practically inescapable. Between phones, tablets, PCs, game consoles, televisions and set-top boxes, the Internet exists in every corner of our lives. Almost. In the wake of this year’s CES, we’re hearing louder than ever that the future is “The Internet of Things,” everyday devices equipped with sensors and connectivity to work together, understand what we’re doing, and operate automatically to make our lives easier.

Writing Today On Blogs Is Also Sharing Links And About Basics Knowledge Of Cyber-Security

sharing iconWhen WE work together on collaboration, and ALSO when WE as authors are posting, WE are also sharing files, photos and links, right!? BUT how to be sure that WE share ONLY stuff which is NOT infected with malware!? It’s OUR RESPONSIBILITY to present to the OTHERS ONLY secure stuffotherwise their devices could get infected, so let’s start below to find out on How-To. It’s actually very easy…

It certainly would happen ALSO that WE are confronted with technical words about Cyber-Security and Internet-Safety which whom WE are NOT familiar, right? That is WHY I have added on this blog, on the right hand side navigation menu, some useful ONLINE tools which WE can use to UPDATE the filter between OUR two ears (called also brain) 😉

.Please check the right hand navigation menu and you will see this…

Secure Surfing Behavior And Sharing Behavior

THUMBS-UPOne can’t trust any web site and any content published on Internet, don’t be naive! It’s the same as on real world, there are bad guys and good guys, but how to find out? My favorite FREE Software to make me my Online Life easier and more secure as they show me which web sites are trustworthy and which web sites I shouldn’t visit at all because they are malicious and could infect my computer is McAfee SiteAdvisor!!! But don’t forget also, there is and never will be a 100% security!

.

Don’t FORGET to read ALSO my blog post who explains in detail:

Concerning this blog, YOU will get provided on the right hand side navigation menu bar with the FREE link of WOT (Web Of Trust), which I recommend strongly to install, BEST would be together with McAfee SiteAdvisor together (that works perfectly, NO problem of interference…).

.

WOT (Web Of Trust)

Click the image to access the FREE service OR this link ===> https://www.mywot.com/ <===

NOW, after having installed those two FREE services YOU can surf much more relaxed without fearing to share malicious links.

A Bit More About Internet-Safety – OUR Behavior On The Internet

sharing iconBehavior on the internet is similar to OUR behavior in the real world; WE are copying OURSELVES with OUR character into the virtual world… Therefore it is important to know about how WE are acting and especially on how the bad boys are profiting from it, OH YES, THEY DO!!! WE need to accept that NOT everything is positive on the internet! WE need to learn about NOT being anymore on NAIVETY status!

I will hurt again some with my last phrase, BUT sorry, REALITY must get accepted 😉 Living in a NEW world (BTW: it isn’t different in the Real-World…), the Virtual-World, WE are like NEW born and WE need to learn a lot to not get fooled by the bad boys and by OURSELVES, especially when being Teachers and Educators! WHY especially Teachers and Educators!? Simple reason is: WE as teaching persons can’t forward OUR knowledge when WE don’t have a lot, right!? SO… It’s up to us to learn on a maximum to know what are the dangers of the internet, to know BEST (complete) resources to learn from,to understand them, to change OUR attitudes, and to forward that knowledge to OUR STUDENTS with OUR pedagogical background. WE, as teaching persons are responsible for the future!

PKM – Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management

PKM – Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management

.

Wordl-Logo-21stCentury-Education.

How-To Manage The Mass Of Information WE Encounter Each Day?

When WE use Social-Media, especially Twitter, lots of users know already about a PLN (Personal [Professional] LEARNing Network) and through it WE get a MASS of information on a daily base. So, not easy at all when people don’t know how-to organize that information

.

Twitter as PLN

Click image ===> What is a PLN? <===

Well, it is actually NOT that difficult when people are Up-To-Date with THEIR Professional Development and learned already about Curation! YES, I am mentioning again and again Professional Development (hate me for that…)… Curation is ALREADY around for at least 4-5 years (2014) and especially pushed trough to the Social-Media scene the last three years!!! SO, if YOU NEVER heard about it YOU know NOW how much YOU are behind with YOUR Professional Development, about time THEN to catch UP 😉

SO… NOW seriously, how can WE get to the point that WE are ready on a daily base to stock, on an intelligent way, ALL the lived information flow, which WE can use later wisely??? The filter situated between OUR two ears (called ALSO brain) doesn’t memorize such BIG DATA, very rare are such persons… So WE have to use some tools, right!?

There are different tools and Apps existing, such as Diigo, Zite, and much more, BUT there is ALSO Curation. And my personal favorite is Curation, especially ===> Scoop.it. <===

What Is Curation?

Check the image below, please, who explains it very well.

.

content curation

BUT, WHY and HOW do I use Curation for my PKM (Personal [Professional] Knowledge Management)?

Content Curation gives me the freedom to OWN my learning, through well chosen sources on the internet, and by giving them the right “Tags” it allows me to find the sources easily back later. BUT first of all I read the articles before I curate them, so I learn through the reading and as more often I do this as BETTER my brain gets trained to understand very quickly!

First I was wondering about this new trend and was not sure what to do with it, but after some research on Internet about it I found out that curation to me is the best way to collect articles which I select through quality criteria, which I can archive under different topics and which I find easily back through the “Tags”, as the “Tags” play the role of a table of content. For a Life-Long-Learner like me curation is like a treasure of knowledge and information that is getting shared through the online community. Through curation one has the possibility to FREE online learning and through sharing it to create a community with the same interests. Curation could also save people of same interests a lot of time and provides them with valuable content which could get used to link back to them in written articles, blogs, web sites and social media sites. Also one learns from each other in the curation community as one has the possibility to follow interesting curation.

Check also:

See ALSO this on a practical example, check out please my curation below.

.

Curation of Gust MEES

Click image please, or this link ===> http://www.scoop.it/webwizard <===

This said, Curation for me, as a Life-Long-Learner, is a great PKM solution! BUT, let us ALSO show WHAT others published about PKM, please check my curation about it below.

.

PKM

.

As WE were talking about the “Tags” in Curation, the above screenshot and link is issued through my “Tags” in my curation, where here below a screenshot about it…

.

Tags and PKM in curation

.

SO, probably NOW YOU will have some brain-food to get occupied with it 😉 Use it wisely!

.

Stay tuned for next blog posts and NEW adventures in Social-Media Education 😉

Learning to balance Digital Citizenship, Research and Publishing!

This article is a reblog from Pippa Davies blog.

own work

To protect or not protect our students from the net, that is the question? Does censorship, or continuing education work? I believe that the more we help guide our students online, the more likely they will, by osmosis, become excellent purveyors of online content, and creators of their own digital identity. They will learn to value what is true, worthy, current and reliable online!

At what age does critical thinking begin; when do we as parents, or teachers help our students learn the critical thinking that goes with the territory of being online in the 21 century? We used to think that around 11/ 12 years of age was the age of logic according to educational theorists like Piaget. However university professors can attest to the fact, that many graduate students still do not understand Bloom’s taxonomy of higher level thinking, when publishing their first hypothesis. So how do we expect children as young as six to assimilate, adapt and formulate their own opinions on what they are reading online? We see toddlers consuming content already on iPads, and we know the research shows that reading digital content is all part of improving literacy skills at younger ages, but again where are the parameters?

Here are some suggestions to help your students incorporate critical thinking skills, and be able to learn how to evaluate online:

  • Parents are encouraged to be involved in providing guidance for their students, with tools to help them assimilate content using computer filters, curation, and organizational apps to help collect websites that pertain to education and their interests. (Bookmarking tools such as Symbaloo, Mentor Mob, Scoopit, Diigo, and RSS feeds, or apps like Flipboard, are all excellent ideas for helping your students traverse the net and share with others). But for younger students, starting with resources like Commonsense Media, or Media Smarts, and our HCOS linking library to help find quality authoritative resources, are also useful. Remember those great, child friendly search engines too, like SweetSearch and Google SafeSearch for Kids. Set guidelines for Internet time appropriate for your family’s needs and balance. Teach digital citizenship lessons using online games for younger students, and for high school students encourage the creation of a digital dossier!
  • Once your students are old enough to enjoy more time online provide some critical thinking lessons. Project based learning will help create an environment to substantiate the kind of cognitive concepts you want to see in place, to ensure your students can gravitate towards aggregating data online. Teach your students to research projects that relate to their passions and interests, which in turn will lead to engaging discoveries!
  • Teach your students about brainstorming a topic using keywords. Discover lessons that help with keyword search in Google Lesson plans. Create topics which include basic questions that include what, when and where, as well as more open ended questions, why, and how?
  • Assess their work based on how they went about the research process, as opposed to the content they listed, copied or shared. Give good marks for a qualitative bibliography, where students have researched links from wiki’s or other references from websites. Share tools like Bib me to make their bibliography stress free! Make sure students have gone beyond Google to find their sites, using educational indexes, following links in wiki’s, and academic databases like Ebscohost. Your school or public library has access to academic databases like Discovery Streaming, BrainPop, and Expert Space.  All of these 21st century tools will help your students take their next project to an A!
  • Applaud if they have used different means for sharing their projects like video, podcasting, animation, virtual worlds, infographics or blogs. All of these online tools teach 21 century skills, and help students create a digital identity which is true to their learning style, and may be collated from Kindergarten through graduation as a reflective tool for online learning, and also for a life long digital portfolio!
  • Help your high school student create their own blog to share their academic authority or hobbies using Ning or Blogger/Wordpress, and if you have a younger student teach them how to blog on moderated sites like Kidblog.
  • If your student is using social media as a means for collaborative learning make sure that you as a parent are fully acquainted with what they are doing online during their school and personal time.  Join their social networks or find out more about their means of communication such as What’s App.
  • Plan the research process using Big Six skills, mind mapping like Popplet, databases like Webspiration, and research/writing websites like Owl of Purdue. Encourage and teach your students to learn how to research what makes an infographic appealing, and then suggest they make their own infographic using tools like Piktochart.
  • Most important before your student has the freedom to explore the net on their own, expand on how to evaluate a website. Kathy Shrock’s Critical Evaluation of Information website has a plethora of lesson plans for you to share with your students on web evaluation. Teach copyright and creative commons to your students if they are already publishing. This could be part and parcel of a middle school journey into becoming an educated, and discerning producer of content.

Once your student understands how to evaluate websites, blogs and infographics, they will be more critically attuned to sharing a digital identity, understand how to assess their own presentations, and be safer online for life.

Our Responsibility While Sharing | Cyber-Security Knowledge Is A MUST!

.
Learning IT-Security

.
.
When WE work together on collaboration WE are also sharing files, photos and links, right!? BUT how to be sure that WE share ONLY stuff which is NOT infected with malware!? It’s OUR RESPONSIBILITY to present to the OTHERS ONLY secure stuff, otherwise their devices could get infected, so let’s start below to find out on How-To. It’s actually very easy…
.

What we already learned in Part1 + Part2 + Part3:

.

The browser, such as: Internet Explorer [IE], Mozilla FirefoxGoogle ChromeSafari + … is the gateway for malware. You use your browser to navigate Internet and if your browser and add-ons are not updated they might lead you to a “drive-by-download“; thus meaning you infect your computer by only visiting a web site!!!

.

.

Very important and what most of people don’t know and don’t realize:

  • Any installed software on your computer must be updated as older versions might have a vulnerability who could get exploited by the bad guys to take control over your computer!
  • Not every web site you are visiting and/or who you find in the search results of search Engines are trustworthy and/or secure!

.

Let’s go for part 4: Surf more secure-which web sites to trust?

.

A bit of theory. If you don’t like, switch to first screenshot shown below to start straight of for practice. But it might be good (important) to know that theory, take your time, please 😉

.

First a reminder and the most important to know to have best protection on your computer:

 What you MUST KNOW!

      • Automatic Windows Update must be enabled
      • Third Party Programs are responsible for 78% of vulnerabilities!!! What are Third Party Applications (Programs)? Knowing that third party programs are vulnerable also, we must update them also! Use SECUNIA PSI to update automatically third party programs https://secunia.com/
      • Browsers (ALL) need to get updated!
  • The weakest link in the Security Chain is the human! If you don’t respect certain advice you will get tricked by the Cyber-Criminals!

===> NOBODY is perfect! A security by 100% doesn’t exist! <===

.

Secure Surfing Behavior

.

One can’t trust any web site and any content published on Internet, don’t be naive! But don’t forget also, there is and never will be a 100% security!

.

Tip: you may use different similar software and add-ons together, there is no problem to do so. I use McAfee SiteAdvisor, WOT and as I have installed Symantec Internet Security (security suite) I get also their results shown… Other Security-Suites from different security manufacturers are also proposing similar solutions…

.

First look what happens when clicking on any link without knowing if that web site is trustworthy and/or secure (not malicious), watch the video below please.

.

..

McAfee SiteAdvisor™ software

McAfee SiteAdvisor™ software

McAfee SiteAdvisor™, software is an award-winning, free browser plug-in that gives safety advice about Websites before you click on a risky site. These site ratings are based on tests conducted by McAfee using an army of computers that look for all kinds of threats (detailed below). The result is a guide to Web safety. The SiteAdvisor software is free, easy to install and even easier to use. And it doesn’t collect any personally identifiable information.

.

===> Check out here for downloadMcAfee SideAdvisor: http://home.mcafee.com/store/free-services <===

.

Let me show an practice example here with a request on a Search Engine (Google) with search word “serialz“, I choose this word to show you ALSO the danger of trying to use illegal software, as you will get a “special bonus“, an infection of your computer with a “Trojan“, “backdoor” and other “malware” while downloading them and/or by using these not serious and illegal services, but check yourself by “learning by doing“; search first without having installed McAfee SiteAdvisor (but without clicking the proposed links, otherwise your computer will be infected) and then install the FREE service from McAfee SiteAdvisor and make the same search, screenshot below shows you the results obtained with different protection software installed (WOT, McAfee SiteAdvisor)…

.

Google search result screenshot

.

First result found in Google shows a web site which is detected as malicious, so don’t use the web sites marked wit a red dot!

.

By moving the cursor over that “red dot” you will get more information about the state of security of that web site, so NEVER click on such links!!!

.

McAfee SiteAdvisor in practice

.

This works ALSO for photos, e.g. search for “justin bieber”, check out screenshot below please.

.

You will see again this “red dot” on right hand photo, NEVER click on such photos and don’t download them also!!!

What YOU should know about Twitter-Chat’s

A Twitter-Chat? ONLY chatting with 140 characters? Is this possible? And can WE make something professional out with that? That are certainly the questions I first will hear when talking about a Twitter-Chat, BUT it is possible and even a very professional way for YOUR own “Professional Development“, when well prepared up from the beginning!

.. Check also my curation about Twitter-Chat’s:

How To create a Twitter-Chat?

programmerman-animatedI will not talk a lot around here to describe How To, but I will provide to you what’s for me the best resource to learn from it. I participate for more than a year already on different Twitter-Chat’s, so I have a good overview and could make my choice for the BEST ones…

.
Global means ALSO, publishing in different languages, so please let me give this message through as well in English 😉
.

Good manners, such as greeting somebody (Hello, Hi…) also and especially on Internet (on Internet it is disappearing almost), saying “Thank you” to somebody and “please” are “keywords” for showing “Respect” to each other.

Stay tuned for next blog posts 😉

I think therefore I blog

Thankful for my network

Thankful for my network (Photo credit: krossbow)
Three years ago when I began my adventure on Twitter, I was amazed at how I could find such value added professional development at my fingertips.  Having blogged for a few years as a teacher librarian for a distance learning school,  I realized that having VOICE was something that resonated deeply within me, and many of my colleagues and students.  I had taught my students  about academic authority, sharing ones passion and reflecting accuracy and currency (all those lovely teacher librarianship question’s).  But now the crunch was up!  Could I role model that myself? Could I learn all these weird and wonderful hashtags, how would I engage in virtual chats, and could I make friends with strangers?

Three years later I am loving the ENGAGEMENT!  Discovering curation and sharing on Scoopit, Twitter, and other social networks like Ning,  has widened my knowledge base, helped me research pertinent scholarly articles, archive for my patrons, and also help me make friends.  One of these friends and fellow teacher librarian from England Elizabeth Hutchinson   collaborated via blog and virtual classroom with our campus and distance learning grade 6/7 students, on Chocolate Lily and Kate Greenaway children’s’ books.  We hoped our students would imbibe cultural sensitivities and global awareness as they studied the language similarities and differences between England and Canada.  We laughed at our accents, shared our silly phrases, and reached out to connect on a heart level around picture books.

On our Ning (a private social network within our distance learning school) we teach digital citizenship skills, such as media sharing, blogging, discuss issues such as cyber bullying, collaborate in online book clubs and participate in events such as our Innovator’s Challenge.  We trust and value our relationship within this private and safe community.

So what I hope to share from this conversation is how we can have virtual relationships using social media.  I was in a library advocacy workshop recently,  and I heard the presenter share that social media is not a place for advocacy.  I would strongly disagree!  Enjoying ten years as a virtual teacher librarian… this is MY world and most of my students world who live in different parts of British Columbia, Alberta and beyond would agree.

My goal is to reach out in love and respect on a global level.  As Gust MEES @Knolinfos my Twitter friend shared  we thought about creating a multilingual social media dictionary for other educators to share their thoughts on the positive and community forming bases for social media.  We can do that in 30 words or in 3 characters.  The choice of words we use can either build up or bring down.  It would be cognizant of different languages, ethnic and religious backgrounds.  Thankfully on Twitter I have seen mostly positive encouragement!  I have also seen poetry in reduction.  As a wordsmith in hiding I LOVE it! Thankful for all things PLN!

We welcome your thoughts!  Thanks @KnolInfos for starting a blog to collaborate on such thoughts!
